About
About Swelia
Where fresh water is running short, and what it costs to replace it.
Swelia is an independent publication about water as a constraint. It covers four things: the groundwater being drawn down faster than it refills, the ground that sinks when that water leaves, the rivers already divided between more claimants than they can supply, and the engineering that is offered as an answer.
The reporting is built on measurement — well readings, gauge records, reservoir elevations, satellite interferometry — and it names the institutions the numbers come from, so any figure here can be checked against its source.
Nothing on the site is behind a paywall. It is funded by the organisations listed on the front page, none of which have any say in what is published.
